Supply Lists

 

Acrylic Painting

Artist Acrylic paint (not the craft paint)

Red: alizarin crimson and cadmium medium

Yellow:  cadmium medium or primary

Blue: Phalo, primary or Prussian

White

Acrylic mat medium

gesso

 

These are the minimum colors needed. Liquitex value series is a good beginners brand and comes in kits with most of these basic colors. Other colors you may wish to purchase are burnt zinnia, raw umber, yellow ochre, phalo Green, and magenta.

 

Brushes: Bristle brushes in fourth, half and one-inch sizes (approximately), several sizes of sable style brushes, foam brush (two or three inch), and Q-tips.  Nice inexpensive brushes can be purchased at Ace hardware store on Richmond Rd. (get the white bristle with green wood)

 Pallet knife

Pallets: Several large plastic containers with lids, or a package of Styrofoam white plates or large white meat trays can be substituted.

 

Matte or gloss medium

 

Large size container for water (coffee cans, ice cream tubs)

 

Clear plastic ruler

 

Paper towels and cotton rags.

 

Stretched canvas, canvas boards, primed masonite, clay board, illustration board, or heavy watercolor paper.  You may want to try assorted surfaces.

 

Table top or floor easel

 

Pencils and vine charcoal also called (willow charcoal) for sketching.

 

Oil Painting

Same as Acrylic expect substitute oil paint for acrylic, odorless or Natural turpentine for water, Liquin   (I like Winsor & Newton brand) for acrylic medium, glass jars with tops for water container.

 

Pastel Supplies
Pastels come in different hardest and many different sets.  You can choice which ones meet your interests and budget.  I recommend the following:

Nupastels Sticks: box of 12 or more

Soft Pastels:  box of 12  or more

Pastel: pencils box or 12 or more

9x12 or larger pastel paper, assorted colors (these come in pads or individual sheets)

Sheet of medium grit sand paper

Knead eraser

X-acto knife or single edge razor

Workable fixative
